Our MUD is pretty newbie unfriendly. If you have ideas how to change that please post here.
I got following idea. You could get periodic random tells from some helper mobile such as 'Did you know that Dwarves got no Mana and thus won't be able to do magic?' Of course this would be toggleable. Please help and submit possible tells for above idea - either here or as mudmail to me. |

We should have someone responsible for 'newbie relations', who comes with ideas for helpfiles, scripts and various other things. |
2004/11/12, 22:42, Axel:
Go ahead and name that person.
In the meanwhile I keep asking people who suffered through starting Warp to tell about what was good and bad and eventually submit ideas. So c'mon. I do not imagine it was all a piece of cake for you?! |

To be more clear - I am not talking about 'mud newbies'(!) - I am talking about people who are newbie to this MUD and who start and lose the fun for whatever reason. |

Can't just name a person, it has to be willing too :)
Maybe a post on board in room 100 where we ask if any builder is willing to take the position of handling newbie relations? :) |
2004/11/13, 19:53, Emre:
Rogon I think you are fully ignoring the very essence of this query or you are simply joking.
I think we thus achieved to spoil an important discussion about one of the assets of an online game: new players. Gratz. |

Hmm, i can't really come up with any new idea, but i can give my vote to Axel's idea about mobs spitting out random helpful tips to new players. These mobs could be found in places that would attract people with such knowledge, like, a library could hold some mobs that are willing to teach players about basic magic stuffs. And in barracks or guardposts, some soldier could spill a few things about battle and warrior skills. Inns or pubs are known to attract all types of people, so that could be a good place to find general tips about adventuring around our little world. Or, we could just have mobs walking around all over the place, spilling information here and there. But i think it would be more realistic to have those helper mobs placed strategically on spots that gives them a reason for being there. |

I like Virre's idea of placement for info mobs. Have a storyteller, or simple quests to help learn areas, give item to mob and they tell you a story then ask for another item for another story, at the end of the quest give player a trinket (weapond or armour). Here is a silly example:
Have a drunk in a bar say for a beer I will tell you a story. Buy or give him a drink, hear the story which leads you to another item and maybe another mob, and goes from there. Make it low level friendly, don't want them to die while learning. You learn the area and where some items load and maybe get a few helpful hints along the way. |

No emre i wasn't joking or trying to spoil anything, i was 100% serious. We should have someone who's willing (and good at it preferably) to spend his/her time to come with suggestions and ideas for how to help new players, to write script requests, small areas, mobs and whatever else can help them. |
2004/11/14, 20:15, Virre:
Hmm i'm not sure if i would want the ewbie help to be connected to quests and stuffs, think i'd prefer to have it as easy as possible to get help... |
2004/11/14, 23:48, Axel:
Yes, it should be as easy as possible. People feel free to submit ideas what hints could be given out. |
2004/11/15, 00:21, Virre:
Just a question:
Exactly how basic do we want the information to be? I mean, do we expect newbies to know about things that experienced players take for granted, like, a warrior character should have the bash skill or he will suck bigtime? If we want to have mobs saying those kind of _really_ basic bits of information, a decent list could be done pretty easily with just basic tips. BTW: If anyone have a good suggestion for a word that can be used instead of 'basic' that means the same thing, feel free to say it to me ;) |
2004/11/15, 02:21, Mystries:
The quest would be something to do. Having a mob start spouting info is annoying and can spam a screen if you do not have a good link. Having a quest is having them give info on request. At least have them so they do not talk just because you walked into the room.
Can have a newbie learning center. Ask teacher help warrior. Teacher spouts info on warrior. Ask teacher help wardance. ect...... |
2004/11/15, 09:58, Virre:
Or maybe there could be a command for turning newbie help off, that lets you ignore says from those mobs...Dunno... |
2004/11/15, 18:16, Axel:
I already stated that in my initial post :) |
2004/11/15, 20:53, Virre:
yea just noticed. You rock, i suck.
Now answer the question 'Exactly how basic do we want the information to be?' please! |
2004/11/16, 01:19, Axel:
if it is up to me - it would vary from 'change colour default all', over 'autoexit' to 'beggars might help you to get to the south gate' ... |
2004/11/16, 01:20, Axel:
yes that is not RP'ish really, but its really hard to talk about basic mud (client?) commands in an RPish way :) |
2004/11/18, 01:48, Virre:
An aged veteran tells you 'A good way to gain advantage over your enemy is to land a heavy bash on him, using your shield to stun him!'
A drunken bum tells you 'Don't drink too much alcohol, or you will find speaking somewhat troublesome' An even more drunken bum tells you 'See? Li*HIC*ke thizzz' =P |

How many people that start playing the mud have never played a mud before, any ideas?
As stated before, it would be nice if a librarian would say 'Those who seek for knowelage of any kind must find it in books' or tips like that, that are actually more 'fortune cookie' type, but have a real meaning in them... If a person has read some help files, he would actually type 'read book' or 'list books' or something like that, after which the librarian should be more helpful. Maybe I didn't explain it very well. The 'help newbie' is in a quite bad state - after I wrote it Rogon just put it up and now it is as it is... It should be split to smaller pieces and improved... Maybe there should be a book or so, that is forced to every new character (or account's first character), e.g. 'As a gift from the gods, a small book of basic knowelage appears in your hands.' |
2004/12/04, 22:07, Ranald:
Hmm i can only speak for myself, but i don't like having to read long texts...IMO it would be better with some small tips here and there =P |
2005/01/15, 00:03, Merrill:
I find single mob monologues pretty strange. Why should the citizen suddenly start spouting tips to me? What would be nicer would be staged conversations between mobs, with tips in. One could be boasting to the other about how he cleverly overcame a certain foe, or discussing how he'd made some really good armour out of blah, or how the old woman down the road is desperate for some such-and-such. The eavesdropping player could either hear all this by default or would have to actively listen in to the conversing mobs. Thoughts? |
2005/01/17, 07:59, Ranald:
Merill: I think it is a good idea, but i can't say that i see anything wrong in having a mob doing monologues, if the player triggers it, by asking the mob something, or nodding to its offer to spill some useful tips. Both ways are as good to me. |
