+---------+---------+---------+---------+---------+---------+---------+--------- Help Newbie ----------- This helpfile is ment for people who are new to mudding and new to Warp. If you are playing a MUD for the first time, reading through this helpfile before asking other players about basic things would be appreciated. Most topics are handeled in a short form, in order to make reading easier for those who are not interested in all the subjects. Probably the first question that interest newcomers is "What is a MUD"? A MUD is a Multi-User Dungeon, where people fight, socialize and hang around. It is completely text based and all interaction with the MUD is done by typing. How to Start ------------ At the beginning, you will probably find yourself confused, what do you have to do. Of course, the foundation of mudding is commands. Commands are the things, that allow you to talk, fight and move around. Without them a MUD can not be played. To see a lise of commands, type: COMMANDS. The descriptions and usage of basic commands can be found at HELP NEWBIE COMMANDS. After you have familiarized yourself with the basic commands, it is time to choose who you would like to be. If you already have a character on Warp, you may skip this part, though reading this will do no harm, especially if you do not know much about the races and classes. All info about the current races and sides is written in HELP RACES. Help about different classes can be found in HELP CLASSES. There are no suggestions on what class, side or race you should play, as they are all balanced. Rules and Behaviour ------------------- Other players are real people just like you, thus do not do things to them that you do not want to be done to you. ALL players on a Warp must follow certain rules. Rules breakers are punished hardly. Before you start to play, please read RULES. Maybe the most common rule-breaking for new players is using multipile accounts and playing many characters at once, which is not allowed. Igoring the rules or just saying "I didn't know this rule" is not an acceptable excuse for breaking rules. Finding Help ------------ After you have made yourself a character, you probably have many questions. Basic information and questions will be handled in this guidline. If you have read this guidline through, but have not found an answer to your question, the next thing for finding answers is probably the help files - HELP. The command HELP is the best solution for finding information, as most skills, spells and other topics are handled there. Many things are not written in help (e.g. where to find items, where to practice, what equipment to use...). To those questions you may find answers by yourself, by walking around and exploring the world. If you can not understand something, need some in-game help or other such things, then other mortals are probably the best to get answers from. Though, as mortals are real players just like you, please respect their desclines, if they refuse to help you, as they may be busy or not interested in helping you. In case you are not able to get information from any of the above stated sources, you may try asking an immortal. Please do not feel assulted nor abandoned, if an immortal will not answer your question - this is probably because immortals are not allowed to answer sertain questions (about equipment stats, skills, other players etc). What to do ---------- Now is the time for learning areas, finding equipment etc. At first, it is probably the best to learn the areas close to the place where you started, so you could run safe in case of any danger. As you are exploring the areas, you should look around for equipment too. Basic equipment can be found in different types of containers (e.g. a table or a rack) or on some easy mobiles. Players usually use the word "mob" as a shorter form of the word "mobile". There are many things one can do on a MUD. The three basic things that are done are: * Role-playing (e.g. being a merchant, selling food for example, or just talking and acting like you'd really were that race.). * Gaining experience (HELP EXPERIENCE - players usually say "exping or xping" instead of gaining experience.). Gaining experience is one of the main ways for getting stronger. If you get enough experience, you get a level (HELP LEVELS). * Chatting - some people may use a mud only for communating with friends and other people. Help about communicating can be found under HELP COMMUNICATION. When gaining levels, the number of practice points you have raises. You can use these pracitce points to train yourself (see HELP PRACTICE) in special skills (e.g. axe handling, warp lightning). To see what skills and spells you can practice, and at what level, use HELP SKILLS. To see a list of skills for a specific class, use HELP SKILLS (e.g. HELP SKILLS SCOUT). Experience is usually mainly gained by killing mobiles, but it can be gained from quests or other such things too. It is wise to choose what mobiles you decide to kill, as some may be too hard to kill and maybe even kill you. Do not kill mobiles of your own race, unless you know what you are doing. This may affect your align and that may set you some restrictions while playing a sertain race. Quests ------ Quests are quite fun things to do. In order to complete a quest, you have to think and search around. Quests are usually given by mobiles, but different quests are offered to players at different levels. Usually, the higher level you are, the harder it is to complete the quest. Quests do not have to be done for fun. Many people complete quests for the reward, which usually is an item or something else valuable. Enemies ------- All races on Warp have enemies. Enemies can be divided into two: mobile enemies and player enemies. Mobile enemies (e.g. orcs, if you are playing a good race) usually protect some certain area or place and sometimes may come after you. Player enemies are marked with ** (e.g. *an Orc*). They are players just like you and see you in ** too. Players usually will try to kill you, unless they are lowlevels or busy with something else. They do not care about your level, thus if you are lowlevel or inexperienced, you should run. Very often they may track you, so it is necesseray to run to safety of good mobs or to other players of your side. Basic Commands -------------- This is a list of basic commands. Most of them are necessary for playing Warp. For many commands, you may use an abbrevation (e.g. instead of typing "giggle" you may use "gig"). For a full list of commands type COMMANDS. For many commands, you may use HELP (e.g. help change). Movement: You can move around in warp with six basic directions: east, west, north, south, down, up. Typing those long directions is not needed, you may just type the first letter of the direction (e.g. n for going north). You can not go to every direction in a room. To see a list of exits in a room, type EXITS. This will show you the possible directions where you can go, and if possible the names of the rooms. In some rooms, you may use the command ENTER to enter some specific room (e.g. enter hut). Those kinds of entrances can not be seen with the EXITS command, instead of that they are usually written in the description of the room. Interacting with the world: For seeing what is around you, there are two basic commands: LOOK and EXAMINE. EXAMINE (abbrevation: EXA) is used for seeing detailed information (e.g. if you have brief mode on examine will show room descriptions), but look is used for more general (e.g. LOOK doesn't show room descriptions if brief mode is on) view. You may use look for looking at something. For this use LOOK (e.g. look bear). If you look or examine an object or a mobile, you will see its description and in case of a mobile, you will see its equipment too. Fighting: As fighting probably occurs quite often in a MUD, the main command for starting a fight with someone is KILL (e.g. kill bear). You may use kill for attacking mobiles or enemies. This will make you start a fight with someone, using the weapon(s) in your hand(s). There are numerous skills taught by mobiles in various places, which are used while fighting. A lise of skills that one can learn is written under HELP SKILLS. Information about a specific skill can be seen by typing HELP (e.g. help bash, help shatter bones). This will give a short description of the skill and who, how and when can practice and use it. Communication: Contacting others is quite needed while playing a mud. Different communication channels are meant for different usage. A list of communication channels and a brief description for every one of them can be seen under HELP COMMUNICATION. Probably the main communication channels are: say, yell, tell, narrate. The command SAY (e.g. say Hello.) can only be heard by people that are in the same room with you. If you use yell, people in your room and in nearby rooms will hear you (e.g. yell Could anyone help me please?). Tell is used for telling someone who is not in your room. Tell can only be heard by the person who you tell to, even if one should be very far away. You can not tell to someone if one is asleep or in a room where tells are not allowed. To tell someone, you must use TELL (e.g. tell Naga). Narrate is used for sending a message to all players who are on your side (only people that are sleeping or in a room where narrates can not be heard will not hear narrates). If you find that you do not want to hear tells from someone or the player's narrates, use IGNORE (e.g. ignore Ream). If you do not want to hear narrates at all, use CHANGE NARRATES. Please, do not abuse any communication channels - please read RULES CHANNELS. Socials: Socials are commands that are used for expressing feelings or emotions. A list of socials can be seen by typing SOCIALS. For example, if you type just SMILE, you will get the following message - "You smile happily." - but others see it as "Rogon smiles happily." Of course, "Rogon" is substituted with your characters name. If you use SMILE (e.g. smile rogon), you will get the following message - "You smile at him." - but he sees it as "Rolf smiles at you." Every social has different messages and most of them can be used with targets too. A target may be "self", some other player or a mobile. Aliases: The idea of an alias is to shorten the amount of text one has to type. Though many commands have abbrevations, but many need to be written in full length. Aliases may be used for making it quicker to type (e.g. aliasing bash as b allows one to type just "b", thus saving time). The usage of aliases is written under HELP ALIAS. For example, if you want to alias bash under the letter b, you have to type ALIAS b bash. Then by typing B it will mean the command BASH. If you want to be able to use B , you have to alias bash this way: ALIAS b bash $*. Then by typing B BEAR you will bash a bear even if not fighting it. Aliases are most commonly used for spells, as a spell needs quite many letters. For aliases CAST 'shatter bones' under cs, use the following: alias cs cast 'shatter bones'. If you want to be able to cast it at a target, the $* at the end is needed (alias cast 'shatter bones' $*). There are other different usages for the alias command and all of them are written under HELP ALIAS.
